Your mileage may vary. This is our first pass at a benchmarking tool that reflects actual numbers harvested from managers responsible for translation budgets across a variety of market sectors. It is by no means perfect, but it is the first step toward a much more sophisticated tool. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, as you use this guide, please note:

• The data on which this calculator is based comes from an exclusively American sample of companies that we interviewed for our report “Beggars at the Globalization Banquet.” This interview set included a wide variety of vertical segments, so it was much broader than the usual survey of high-tech companies that tend to spend more freely on localization and translation.

• This report dealt with budgeted translation spending. We recognize that there’s some activity that happens under other budget categories, but the companies we spoke to were unable to track that in their systems.

• European spending may be higher – we plan to investigate that in a report later this year. It may actually be the case that American companies do not under-invest, but rather that they have less insight into actual investments.
